Back to Campus
Welcome back to 91´óÉñÊÓƵ. Whether you're a student settling into a new semester, a faculty member preparing for the classroom, or a staff member supporting daily operations, technology plays a central role in your success on campus. This guide is designed to help students, staff, and faculty get up to speed quickly on the systems, software, and support resources available across our Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield campuses.
Inside, you'll find practical guidance on the tools you'll use most often, from Microsoft 365 and Zoom to requesting lab software and connecting with the IT helpdesk. You'll also find information on where to go for in-person support, how to submit a request through our client portal, and what to expect as new technology and services roll out throughout the year.
Our goal is simple: to make sure technology supports your work and learning rather than getting in the way of it. If you can't find what you're looking for in this guide, our helpdesk team is always ready to help.

Device Installation Limits
Each person's Microsoft 365 license allows installation of the desktop and mobile apps on up to 5 devices — this can be any combination of:
- 5 desktop/laptop computers (Windows or Mac)
- 5 tablets
- 5 mobile phones
You can install on more devices than that over time, but you can only be actively signed in on 5 devices at once. If you try to sign in on a 6th device, you'll be prompted to deactivate one of your existing devices first — this is managed automatically through your Microsoft account and takes just a few seconds.
Tip for the checklist: Faculty, staff, and students transitioning between campus computers, personal laptops, and mobile devices should periodically check their active device list at office.com (under Account settings) and deactivate old or unused devices to free up space in their 5-device allotment.
How to Get Started

Software Installation & Procurement
If you need software installed on computers in a campus computer lab, for a specific course, research project, or departmental need, this is handled through a request to Technical Support Services (TSS), not a self-service install.
How to Submit a Request
- Go to
- Click "Submit a Ticket"
- Complete the request form, be sure to include the following:
- Name of the software/application
- Which lab(s) or specific computers need the install
- Course number or department (if applicable)
- Date needed by (please allow adequate lead time, see note below)
- Licensing information, if the software requires a license key or subscription your department already owns
Important Notes
- Submit requests as early as possible. Lab software installs often require testing, imaging, and coordination with TSS staff. Last-minute requests close to the start of a semester may not be guaranteed.
- Licensing matters. If the software requires a paid license, confirm your department has already purchased the necessary licenses before submitting the request. TSS installs software but does not procure licenses on your behalf.
- Standard vs. specialty software. Commonly used academic software may already be available in labs. Check with TSS before submitting a request in case it's already installed.
- Requests are tracked and fulfilled through the helpdesk ticketing system, so you'll receive updates on the status of your request.
Any new software being purchased or brought into use at 91´óÉñÊÓƵ, whether for a department, classroom, or individual role, must go through a formal procurement request. This process ensures the software is properly vetted, licensed, and secure before it's approved for use.
How to Submit a Request
- Go to
- Click "Submit a Ticket"
- Complete the request form, and be sure to include the following information:
- Name of the software/application and vendor
- Intended use and department
- Number of users or licenses needed
- Estimated cost, if known
- Any data the software will access or store (student, employee, or institutional data)
IT Risk Assessment and Approval
All software procurement requests go through an IT risk assessment before approval. This review evaluates factors such as data security, privacy compliance, integration with existing university systems, and accessibility. Because of this review process, software procurement requests should be submitted well in advance of when the software is needed. Timelines will vary depending on the complexity of the request, but early submission helps avoid delays.
Software cannot be purchased or installed prior to receiving approval through this process.
Hardware
The CU Student Laptop Loaner Program is an initiative of the Office of Technology at the university with the goal of providing equitable access to technology resources for students demonstrating need for the equipment. There are a limited number of laptops available, and requests will be reviewed working with the Financial Aid office. If you would like to request a loaner device,
91´óÉñÊÓƵ students have access to discounted pricing on computer hardware through select manufacturer partnerships. Before making a purchase, students are encouraged to review the minimum system requirements below to ensure whatever they buy will work well with university systems and coursework.
Available Discounts
Students can access education pricing directly through the following manufacturer sites using a valid 91´óÉñÊÓƵ email address:
Minimum System Requirements
For the best experience with university software, learning platforms, and coursework, we recommend a device that meets the following minimum specifications:
- Operating System: Windows 11 or macOS (current or one version back)
- Processor: Intel i5 or equivalent (or Apple M-series)
- RAM: 8GB minimum, 16GB recommended
- Storage: 256GB minimum
- Webcam and microphone: Built-in or external, for Zoom and other video conferencing needs
- Wi-Fi: 802.11ac or newer
A Note on Tablets and Chromebooks
While tablets and Chromebooks can be useful supplemental devices, they are not recommended as a student's primary computer. Many required software applications, including full desktop versions of Microsoft Office, specialized course software, and certain testing or proctoring tools, do not run properly (or at all) on Chromebooks or tablet operating systems like iPadOS or Android.
Students who plan to use a tablet or Chromebook as their only device may run into compatibility issues with coursework, particularly in programs that rely on specialized software (engineering, design, science labs, etc.). We recommend a traditional Windows or Mac laptop as a primary device, with a tablet or Chromebook used only as a secondary or supplemental tool if desired.
Staying Connected
91´óÉñÊÓƵ has a system for communicating emergency information to the campus community. The Rave system is designed to send text, voice, and email messages to compatible devices in the event of an emergency situation. Students are automatically registered from MyBanner; Faculty and Staff can sign-up for free, and the contact information will not be shared.
CATS has a to Brightspace, Zoom, and integrated technologies.

Brightspace Pulse is a mobile app that can help learners stay connected and on track with their courses in Brightspace Learning Environment. It provides one easy view of course calendars, readings, assignments, evaluations, grades, and announcement items. The app can help learners make better decisions about how to handle workload, when to submit assignments, and when to prepare for tests. Real-time alerts can let learners know when classes are canceled, rooms are moved, or new grades are available. The schedule view and weekly visualization enables learners to quickly at a glance view what is due today, this week, and upcoming across all their courses.
Keeping Yourself Safe
Cybersecurity Awareness training is made available at hire time for employees and for students when email addresses are created, and announcements are made for new assignments via email. Yearly training occurs in October which refreshes important basics and covers new topics as the Cybersecurity landscape changes.
